Experience Across Distros Wanted

I'm looking for some input that would probably be best asked of people who have used multiple Linux distros. I'm not really looking for a "Hurray for my team" opinion. I'm sure most have some level of loyalty to their distros.

My question, in your experience, what are some of the best distros for package installation or source code compiling / installs, with out a lot of hacking and tailoring? I don't want to feel like I'm constantly trying to jam a square peg in a round hole. Finding drivers the are "almost" what your are needing.

I do like the idea of learning and some configuring personal choices, but get frustrated with downloading a simple program / game to discover I'd need to be a Felicity Smoak (pardon the Arrow ref) just to get it to run.

BTW I'm not a Linux hack but I'm not a computer novice. I have a computer degree and used to be a DOS / Early Windows guru. I'd consider myself an advance user, not a hardcore hack.
