Create file icon on the Desktop from Leafpad

I would like to copy files from VirtualBox > Kali to my mounted USB thumbdrive.
How do I get Leafpad to create a file icon on the Desktop.
I am able to open gmail and attach the file for mailing to myself but there is no visible icon for a drag and drop method.
Is this a Gnome 3 GUI question?
I'm an A+/Net+ tech and am trying to decompose the task so i know what to research.
