Josh Gordon's time with the New England Patriots is reportedly over due to a knee injury, but his season might not be done just yet.

The Patriots announced Wednesday they've placed the wide receiver on injured reserve. But the 28-year-old's ailment is considered minor and he expects to be cleared soon, a source told MMQB's Albert Breer.

Either way, New England is moving on from Gordon and will likely waive the pass-catcher from IR when he's fully healthy, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

ESPN's Field Yates initially reported Gordon wouldn't return this season, but later added it's possible he could land with another team once he's recovered from his knee issue.

One possibility to mention/update: the Patriots could negotiate an injury settlement off of IR with Josh Gordon, which would then open the door to him signing with another team and paying again this season once healthy. https://t.co/aXdi3nW711

The Patriots' decision to place Gordon on injured reserve seemed to come as a surprise to the wideout:

Gordon apparently aggravated the injury in Week 6 and sat out Monday night's win over the New York Jets.

New England made a move to replace Gordon on Tuesday, trading a second-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for Mohamed Sanu.

Sanu will likely slide into a starting role alongside Julian Edelman and Phillip Dorsett. Undrafted rookie Jakobi Meyers could also see his role expanded after racking up 101 yards on nine catches over the last two games with Gordon sidelined.

Gordon returned to the Patriots in August after the NFL reinstated him from the third indefinite suspension of his career. He caught 20 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown in six games this season.
