Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been ruled out for Sunday night's game against the Green Bay Packers.

"He just wasn't ready. He needs a little bit of time here," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher.

Mahomes suffered a right knee injury in last Thursday's win over the Denver Broncos. Though he was initially given a three-to-eight week recovery timeline, the reigning league MVP returned to practice this week in an attempt to play in the Week 8 clash.

Reid had left the door open for Mahomes to play Sunday, saying as recently as Wednesday his quarterback was "full steam" ahead in drills.

Backup Matt Moore will start in Mahomes' place against the 6-1 Packers.

Chiefs starters Chris Jones, Frank Clark, Kendall Fuller, Eric Fisher, and Andrew Wylie have also been ruled out for the game. But receiver Sammy Watkins, who's been sidelined since Week 4, will play Sunday.
