Superior alternatives to core utility tools?

Hello
In Linux, there might exist a number of alternative programs available to choose from for core utility functions.
Some examples might help explain and demonstrate what I'm thinking of:
Terminal pager: more < less < most
Terminal multiplexer: screen < tmux
Info viewer: info < pinfo
( In the examples above, the program to the right is commonly regarded as overall superior. )
The problem is that it might not always be so easy to learn about these better alternatives!
For example I discovered "pinfo" just a few days ago... while I've been using Linux for about 10 years.
These are some examples I know of.
Do you know of any more better alternatives?
Is there any list maintained somewhere of the "best" alternatives of core utility tools?
