[SOLVED] Problems with root file system

Hi
I am using Linux Mint 19.2. yesterday I did all the updates, however when I switched on the computer this morning (having gone into recovery) I get a message /dev/mapper/mint--vg--root contains a file system with errors.
I now have a message requires manual fsck
(initramfs)
All the different fsck that I have tried do not work for instance
fsck /dev/sda1

I have also tried with the original USB stick from boot to try and repair it, however it refuses to recognise it.
I am really lost here.
Can someone please help
Thank you in advance
