VLC is very flaky in Debian 10.

Hi.
VLC seems a bit unstable in Debian 10 on MATE. Is there a way to make it more stable?
Sometimes when I close it using the X on the window border, it doesn't close and just shows a blank screen - I use xkill to force close it. When I'm in fullscreen, the screen can flicker when resizing, etc. Also for some odd reason, when the VLC window is not selected, the first letter of the video title is highlighted. [see image]
I don't have these issues with other video players (mpv, smplayer) on my system.
Do others have similar issues?
Thanks.
