Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson will undergo surgery to repair a core muscle injury that has bothered him throughout the season, the team announced.

Jackson is expected to miss four-to-six weeks with his abdominal muscle completely torn off the bone, according to NBC's John Clark. He was told the injury is now worse than when it first occurred in Week 2.

The speedy wideout returned from a six-game absence Sunday against the Chicago Bears but left early in the contest after he aggravated his injury.

Jackson's injury was expected to linger for the remainder of the season and he wasn't 100% going into Sunday's game.

The news is a major blow to Philadelphia's offense that has struggled to stretch the field in the veteran's absence.

It is unknown whether the Eagles plan to place Jackson on injured reserve. Given the six-week timetable, it is realistic the receiver could return for the postseason if Philadelphia qualifies.
