Bears' Nagy: Trubisky's benching had 'zero to do with his play'

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy insisted Monday that he relegated Mitchell Trubisky to the bench at the end of Sunday Night Football solely because of injury.

"He has a right hip pointer," Nagy said. "It happened on the sack at the end of the second quarter."

"Every decision that was made, it had zero to do with his play," he added. "It was completely based off his injury and where he was at."

Trubisky was replaced at quarterback by Chase Daniel before the Bears' offense took the field for its final drive against the Los Angeles Rams. Trubisky, a season-long target of criticism, completed 24 of 43 passes for 190 yards with one touchdown and one interception before being removed from the 17-7 defeat.

Initially, the Bears did not provide a reason for Trubisky's removal, while NBC cameras showed the pivot seemingly being consoled by his coach.

The team later announced Trubisky suffered a hip injury and was questionable to return.

The loss was Chicago's fifth in six games. Trubisky, a former No. 2 pick, hasn't eclipsed 200 yards passing in any of his last three contests and ranks 33rd out of 33 qualifying quarterbacks in yards per pass attempt this season.
