Is Forth much faster than C++?

Two contexts:

a) Comparing the speed of the two languages being run under Linux on a home desktop computer?

b) When Forth is being run directly (without an operating system) as an embedded system on microprocessor chip? How would the speed of this compare with either Forth or C++ being run under Linux on a desktop computer?
