unsure about winetricks

So I installed wine. Have done that in previous Linux installs, so nothing new there.

All I ever got to work in wine in the past, and now, are two programs: k-meleon and apophsysis. I got guild wars and celestia working but they only worked the first time, immediately after installation. Never again.

This time around, I thought I'd try winetricks. Supposdely it has tricks to install and run stuff. It would be nice to run more than two programs, you know?

From the wine wiki, a warning I read: "Note: Although using winetricks may be very useful for getting some programs working in Wine, doing so may limit your ability to get support though WineHQ. In particular, reporting bugs may not be possible if you've replaced parts of Wine with it"

I installed winetricks, anyway. Ran it and got a dialog saying something about a prefix. Erm, yeah: can we please define our terms please? You know, the whole making sense thing? I ^c'd out of that. After some research, I added this line to my .bashrc and ran winetricks again:
Code:WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.winewinetricks behaved as before. Dude, your prefix is there, heed it. I ^c'd it again.

I've got a low confidence level here. Is winetricks going to screw stuff up? I mean, if it can't even recognize simple unix environment variables, how can it perform more complicated tasks? Is winetricks a risk? Has anyone had problems with it? Conversly, has anyone actually used it without problems? Should I just delete it and be satisfied with the two programs that wine by itself can actually run?
