Will files on my Win7 be accessible once I install a Linux distro?

Hi!
I am wanting to change my Win7 Dell desktop ( Core i5-3300 with 8 Gb RAM and 64-bit ) over to a good Linux distro. What I want to know is, will Linux "see" all the files that are currently on my HD? -or will the install make that impossible. Of course I am anticipating the end of Win7 support and I don't like 10 or where Windows seems to be going. I am a desktop, monitor, and mouse user who is 62 yrs old and a PhD in Chemistry who remembers the 'Net when it was green text on a black screen and newsgroups were all the rage!
Thanks for any help!
Rocky
