PS1 prompt inserts text "777;preexec"

After an update to Fedora 31, not the most recent one, but an older one, I noticed the following anomaly in non-root screen sessions:

[dboth@david ~]$ echo "Hello world"
777;preexecHello world
[dboth@david ~]$

The extraneous 777;preexec text is insertet in PS1 by the /etc/profile.d/vte.sh script. Commenting out the last few lines, the "case" statement circumvents the problem.

There is a bug about this against tmux and I am wondering if tmux is part of screen.
