Locking Gnome dumps me back at SDDM instead of the Gnome lock screen

This is Kubuntu 19.10, I'd like to try out Gnome and the only issue left to solve is this. When I lock the screen I get dumped back at SDDM, and I can just Ctrl+Alt+F1 my way back into Gnome. If I try to login from SDDM, it freezes after putting in my password, then I'm left with Gnome and a frozen SDDM. Killing SDDM at startup and manually starting GDM freezes the system. I can still power down normally pressing the power button, but can't Ctrl+Alt+F(1,2,3..) out of it. Setting GDM as the default leaves me at a blinking cursor after boot up. I do have gnome-screensaver installed and tried reinstalling gdm3, no success. I just want Gnome to lock properly.
