Xsane and scanning with Canon 8800 flatbed scanner

I am running Linux mint 19 Cinnamon and am using Xsane through Gimp to operate with my Canon 8800 flatbed scanner, It successfully recognizes the scanner but when it opens it flashes through the preview page to the scan page, so I am unable to crop the image to scan into Gimp? I have looked through the forums , tried reinstalling but to no avail.
