How to make The GIMP usable again.

HORRORS! THEY'VE LET THE SCRIPT KIDDIES LOOSE ON THE GIMP!! WHY!!!
Some years ago I predicted that the latest generation of programmers - who now style themselves 'coders' - would devote themselves to "improving" Linux until it becomes completely unusable. Unfortunately, every new distro release confirms my prediction.
I've just upgraded from Deb 8.2 to 10.1 (after skipping 9.x due to its manifold issues) and whilst I'm generally chuffed and gruntled, invoking Gimp 2.10.8 resulted in a UI that was completely unusable for practical day-to-day work.
Sigh!
OK, so I've now got a 'light theme' instead of the 'dark theme' that is now so 'keuwl' that it's mandatory, but the icons in the LH tool matrix have so little contrast that they were indistinguishable until I adjusted my monitor to accommodate what is even 'keuwler'.
Is there an ordinary, sensible icon set that can be installed for us ordinary workers to use, instead of having to use the latest in Script Kiddie Fashion?
