Video Editor software (Kdenlive/Openshot) + hardware question

All right, I have a scenario that I'm hoping some folks here can help me out with.

First off, I edit videos and post them on my YouTube channels. These are not for money-making purposes or anything (although if I ever am able to pass Youtube's crazy requirements for monetization and make some money on them then so be it...I don't foresee anything like that happening, at least not for a looooooooooooooooong time). So it's more of just a hobby/fun thing I do.

My videos/video skills and editing are pretty basic. Basically I make cuts or splits in some videos to take out unnecessary things (I say "um" a lot), some occasional subtitles/text, and sometimes adding music. So, nothing too crazy and pretty minimalist for probably what some video editors can do.

Laptop #1:
Prior to my jump into using Linux as a desktop again, I've been using a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 10 to do my videos. I am using the Filmora program and it has done well for my needs. Here are the hardware specs of the laptop:

CPU: AMD A4-5000 @ 1.5Ghz
RAM: 6GB
HD: 750GB

If I had a video session open with edits and the like, it performed ok. There's not really anyway it could play it back seamlessly with no buffering issues (I wouldn't imagine many could UNLESS you have some super top of the line hardware)...BUT if I would start/stop at each edit to check things it performed fine. Basically, I was able to use it with very little fuss.

Laptop #2:
I fixed up an old Samsung laptop to start testing out Linux as a desktop. I am using the latest version of Linux Mint "Cinnamon" for the distro. Its hardware specs are:

CPU: AMD A6-3410MX 1.6Ghz
RAM: 4GB
HD: 500GB

So...close in spec to the Toshiba/Windows laptop. To help with the transition possibly over to Linux full time (keep in mind I had been using Linux since the early 2000's, but moreso in terms of command-line and servers and NOT in the desktop world), I installed all sorts of various apps to try out for my needs including video editors. I installed OpenShot and Kdenlive. For the most basic of videos, Openshot did great. Well, on one instance, I fired up Kdenlive to try it out and was doing another basic video but decided to add some text to it. This absolutely made the program unusable. Horrible freezing and stuttering. Just an FYI...I did read about the proxy clip setting in Kdenlive and was using that. I wasn't sure what to do and I ended up just editing the video in Windows.

So from that experience, I just wasn't sure if there was some setting in Kdenlive I am missing to help with the performance OR if I just don't have the horsepower for it. Like I said Openshot did work for some of the videos I have tried...BUT it does appear that Kdenlive has a lot more features to play with so I do like that aspect. I'll continue testing things out with these editors to see if I can find out what's going on. But I was also wondering if anybody has experience with these programs and can point me in the right direction in terms of learning/using the software OR if it's just a hardware limitation.

I am hoping that these machine can get me by for now, until I get some better hardware anyways. Appreciate any help you can give.
