Report: Rhule favored to land Giants job, McCarthy to interview

Baylor's Matt Rhule is the early favorite to become the New York Giants' next head coach, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports.

Rhule is generating interest from multiple teams for the second straight year. He turned down the New York Jets last offseason after being denied the ability to hire his own staff.

Rhule, who was an assistant offensive line coach for the Giants in 2012, is believed to share mutual interest with his former employers. Despite wanting sufficient control over any NFL club, the 44-year-old reportedly isn't wary about working with general manager David Gettleman, who New York committed to retaining.

Outside of Rhule, the Giants are expected to use the weekend to interview former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The Giants have also requested permission to interview Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale, who would attempt to bring LSU's Joe Brady with him as his offensive coordinator, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Giants fired Pat Shurmur as head coach Monday after going 9-23 under his watch over the last two seasons. The G-Men have made the playoffs just once since they won the Super Bowl to conclude the 2011 campaign.
