[Inkscape] removing “stacked” objects/knots

Good afternoon.

Having vectorized a JPEG, I am confronted with objects forming "stacks" on one and the same layer. In addition, they are connected to adjacent or "distant" objects.

To remove these objects (which are none; rather the disjoint parts of objects), I have to select knots and remove them subsequently until none are left. There is a screenshot attached to show what I mean: I selected several knots of the overlapping surfaces with the mouse. Simply selecting something with the mouse then hit delete would destroy the whole image. Thank you for not suggesting anything like this.

Removing superfluous elements in this way is rather cumbersome and takes a lot of time. Is there a better way?

TIA.
