Advice needed for partitioning hard drive. Fresh install multi booter.

Hi. I want to repartition two hard drives , one is 150g and the other is 500gs.
I want to have all partition sizes at about 60 gigs so I can back them up with a 65 gig flash drive. Also I have a question on this. Is it safer to have more partitions in case of a hard drive failure?
Besides for the swap partition , should I add a boot partition? Where should the boot and swap partitions be? On the 500 gig drive I'm planing on doing about 8 partitions. Should I go boot, swap and then one primary partition then a extended with 7 logical partitions?
