Dell XPS 9560 Energy consumption being stupid with GNOME
by looop from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4XWJT)
Hey,
I have a Dell XPS 9560 which I am "reasonably" happy with after months of tinkering, running with Fedora 30 and now 31.
When I am on the go I use OpenBox or XFCE (depends a bit on my mood), but when I am in the office connected to screens and charger or just goes to visit a colleague, then I use GNOME.
However, I have a problem with the later. My battery life is roughly 1.5 hours, even with screen on the lowest light setting and that is an improvement over the 35 minutes I had before tinkering.
Any ideas what the f. is going on? Because with XFCE and OpenBox I easily have 4-5 hours battery life, not the best but still.
So part of the tinkering I have done is disabling the gnome-file-indexer which just seems to not work properly on Fedora, which alone gave me an additional .5 hour battery life.
Now, in the beginning, I had to run Ubuntu with Gnome (for stupid reasons), but there my battery life with Gnome was much closer to the 4-5 hour mark I see with XFCE and OpenBox.
ANY! advice is appreciated.
Best, Looop
