Firefox: If I try to open an .md file, tabs just keep opening

I tried some markdown plugin. As soon as I tried to open an .md file, tabs started opening at a rate of several per second. I had to shut down the browser to make it stop.
I removed the plugin. I also removed, and re-installed firefox. But I still have the same problem
Maybe it's some kind of malware? But how do I get rid of it?
