The Boston Bruins placed David Backes on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL's Providence Bruins, the team announced Friday.
Backes, 35, is in the fourth season of a five-year deal that carries an average annual value of $6 million.
After spending 10 seasons with the St. Louis Blues and serving as captain for his final five years with the team, Backes left as a free agent in 2016 and inked his deal with Boston. His production hasn't been the same since, as he's amassed 39 goals and 94 points in 217 games with the Bruins.
The forward has one goal and two assists in 16 games with Boston this season.
