root has internet access but use does not

good day
new slackware install 14.2, ran -
#netconfig
and runs fine in root
has Sync...but, cannot figure how
odin@home~$
does not! I looked in -
#rc.inet1.conf
and of course had to be in root to see it...
...am I missing something?
