UFW Firewall - linking local computers
by Chris.Bristol from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4Y82C)
I have a Ubuntu (Budgie 19.10) desktop and a Windows 7 laptop both connected to my router by wireless. I have installed nemo-share and have shared a folder on the desktop so that it can be seen from the laptop (with a little help from LQ). I can now copy (sets of) files from one to the other easily.
The router is connected to the Internet via a modem, so I have the default Windows firewall on the laptop (switched off for the moment for testing) and UFW on the desktop running a firewall and I have the recommended simple home setup which has these:
Basic Permissions
Profile: Home
Status: On
Incoming: Deny
Outgoing: Allow
That's fine for the Internet, but the laptop couldn't see the desktop unless the desktop firewall was off, so I added these rules:
Attachment 32369Attachment 32370
I believe the 192.168.0.0/24 allows free communication between computers this side of the router. The laptop still can't see the desktop unless the desktop firewall is off.
I haven't really understood the networking properly, in particular the addresses and port numbers, and I am trying to find a tutorial aimed at the right level. However, in the mean time I need to get this working so I can get on with what I want to do. If all else fails I'll have to reluctantly switch off the firewalls I suppose.
