Google running very slowly

I am experiencing difficulties in running google as my homepage in Firefox which started after I got a message in the top left hand side of my monitor showing two versions of Linux mint.
Ike the idiot that I am I just clicked the enter button and message went away. I am running Linux mint cinnamon version 17 on a dell computer.
Hadn't had any problems before message and on looking back I had internet problems with my phone and my provider got me to change some settings. Speed test shows 107mbs download and 9.77 upload but computer shows nothing near that. Speed test was conducted downstairs and also upstairs (upstairs figures quoted) as desktop is upstairs. No problems with google on my phone or iPad. Does anyone think google may be compromised and if so how can I get rid of it. I am a previous windows XP user and am not technical on Linux.
