Apple and Broadcom to pay CalTech $1.1 Billion for patent infringement

Four years ago, the California Institute of Technology filed a lawsuit against Apple and Broadcom for patent infringement. Most of Apple's lineup at the time was shipping with Broadcom Wi-Fi chips, and CalTech claimed that said chips infringed on its own patents. The patents in question concern IRA/LDPC encoders and decoders.

Fast-forward to a couple days ago, a California jury has ordered Apple and Broadcom to pay CalTech $1.1 billion in damages. That figure will be split between Apple and Broadcom, with Apple paying the majority at $837.8 million. Broadcom will pay the remaining $270.2 million.

Apple plans to appeal the decision, claiming it shouldn't be responsible for Broadcom's chip design. Broadcom disagreed with the decision and so plans to appeal as well.
