quick question on efi

can slack and other Linux distro's be put into a fat16 efi partition or does it absolutely have to be fat32?

because from what I've researched is that FreeBSD has to be 16bit, so I am hoping I can put them all into that same 16bit and they all will be added to grub efi boot menu thus (hopefully) eliminating my need for 40_custom to boot FreeBSD. To keep everything in a nice neat same place.

hopefully efibootmgr too will pick it up. Grub does not know what it is though. :(
