Computer scientist regarded as 'the European father of the internet'
The UK's first connection to the Arpanet, a precursor to the internet, was made on 25 July 1973, when a computer at University College London transmitted packets of data to the Information Sciences Institute at the University of South California.
The man behind this milestone was Peter Kirstein, who has died aged 86. Often regarded as "the European father of the internet", Kirstein played a significant role in the technology's early experimental period, helping establish and expand the internet in Europe and other parts of the world.
