Baldur’s Gate 3 is PC-only (for now)
Late last week, Larian Studios gave the internet an in-depth look at its upcoming game, Baldur's Gate 3. Along with a look at both gameplay and cinematics, the studio talked about where we can expect to play the game-and where we shouldn't. Baldur's Gate 3 is in development exclusively for PC.
Larian Studios, also responsible for Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, is developing Baldur's Gate 3 in its new Divinity 4.0 engine, and right now the PC version is the only one on Larian's plate.
"We are now focusing on PC and Stadia, but that's it," Walgrave said when speaking to Eurogamer. He later added that he doesn't think that current-gen consoles would be able to run the game.
"There's a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don't know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things," Walgrave said. He added that they would have to tone down textures to do that and that it "wouldn't look as cool anymore."
If there's anything that the Switch ports of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Divinity: Original Sin 2 have proven, it's that portability is novel enough to let gamers give a pass to that missing extra coat of paint. But it's cool all the same to see a studio focusing firmly on PC as their main platform.
As to future platforms, Walgrave noted that they ported previous games to Mac, Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. "When you've been working on a game for three years," Walgrave said, "you just want to maximize the audience. Like, let's sell it to more people!"
Baldur's Gate 3 system, release date, and settingLarian developed previous games using their own role-playing system. Baldur's Gate 3, on the other hand, uses an interpretation of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, the current version selling on shelves in stores. The team at Larian says that not all rules in 5th Edition translate to an electronic game well. With that in mind, though, they've worked to stay true to the spirit of 5e while also offering the system-based freedom attract players to Larian games.
Baldur's Gate 3 is once again set in the city of Baldur's Gate, though this time during an invasion of mind flayers. The mind flayers infect your player character and their companions with a parasite that will eventually transform all of them into mind flayers. You and your party are on a quest to get the parasites removed. In the meantime, it gives you limited psychic ability and likely changes the game in other ways, too.
You'll be able to play Baldur's Gate 3 on your own, of course. Larian CEO and founder Swen Vincke confirms, though, that the game will offer two-player local and four-player online cooperative play.
Baldur's Gate 3 will hit early access sometime in 2020. Larian Studios has typically released its games as Early Access titles and incorporated player feedback into the final product. The studio hasn't yet announced a final release date for Baldur's Gate 3.
