Chargers' Henry, Broncos' Simmons hit with franchise tag

The Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos each used the franchise tag to lock down a key player Friday.

The Chargers used their tag on tight end Hunter Henry, while the Broncos placed theirs on safety Justin Simmons.

"We remain focused on reaching a long-term contract agreement with Justin, and he's a big priority for us," Broncos general manager John Elway said. "This is a placeholder in that process and our goal is the same - to make sure that Justin is a Bronco for a long time."

Henry was hit with the one-year tender after producing the best statistical season of his career. In 12 games, the tight end caught 55 passes for 652 yards and five touchdowns.

The former second-round pick missed the entire 2018 campaign after tearing his ACL in training camp and missed four games in 2019 due to a tibia plateau fracture in his left knee.

Simmons was named a second-team All-Pro last season after racking up career highs in interceptions (four) and passes defensed (15).
