Redskins place non-exclusive franchise tag on Scherff

The Washington Redskins placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff, the team announced Saturday.

The Redskins initially said they used the exclusive version of the franchise tag - which prevents a player from signing an offer sheet with another team and is almost always used on quarterbacks - before correcting their announcement, per ESPN's Dan Graziano.

The tagging of Scherff takes the top offensive lineman off the board for free agency.

Scherff is projected to make $16.1 million on the one-year tender.

The 28-year-old is widely recognized as one of the best guards in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl in 2016, 2017, and 2019.

However, Scherff has struggled with injuries. The veteran missed five games last season due to ankle, elbow, and shoulder ailments, and he was limited to eight appearances in the 2018 campaign because of a torn pectoral.
