Sluggish laptop

I was recently given a Dell Latitude E6540 laptop. This is probably going to go to our church for use as monitor so people working with the kids can see the live stream of the main service. However, it's got better hardware (Core i7 processor and an actual discrete video card) than my laptop, so I was considering keeping it and using my current laptop as the monitor at church.

Anyway, I installed Slackware -current on it with Plasma 5 from ktown. I noticed that after a few minutes of use after booting up, the user interface starts to become very sluggish. For example, it takes anywhere from a moment to several seconds to open a terminal, pull up the applications menu, open a file, etc. I have checked the system monitor, and it's not coming close to swapping or overloading the CPU when this occurs. It also will still do CPU intensive tasks like compiling on 7 threads very quickly while this is going on. I have tried changing the clocksource from tsc to hpet, disabling the compositor in kwin, disabling Spectre mitigations in the kernel, and rebooting. I'm not sure what else to try. I'm thinking this could be a hardware issue. Maybe the hard drive? I may be receiving another one or two of these in the future, so if they don't have the same problem, I can probably assume it is a hardware issue.
