Rhythmbox does not save data

I have just installed RB 3.4.2 on Mint 19.2 and it is having trouble saving data.
It can save a playlist name permanently but its contents only for a few minutes. Similarly the entire music list often disappears even though the current playlist continues to play.
My guess is that it is something to do with permissions. Any suggestions, preferably to fix the issue but, alternatively, another program that is currently supported and works well.
