I have Ubuntu derivative OS on a USB - Is it better to shutdown or suspend on closing notebook?

This may seem obvious or silly to some. With the above set-up is it better to shutdown after each session or can I risk suspend? Obviously if I knock the flash drive or move the notebook suspend becomes a risk.
Additionally, if I unplug my OS/USB after shutting I asssume it will work in another machine even though I did not 'eject'the USB as is normal procedure with flash drives. Again, I assume closing down has the same effect as 'eject' in this scenario or is this wrong?
