Slackware 14.2, VMware Workstation and UEFI boot

Various people have run into problems running Slackware 14.2 under later versions of VMware Workstation, but nobody seemed to have a work-around as far as I could tell.

Yes, I know 15.0 is on its way, but for some systems I prefer the stability of a production release, and I maintain a set of install scripts and packages to build minimal "appliances".

Symptom 1: Boot from a 14.2 CD/DVD on a UEFI-enabled VM appears to hang after displaying "Welcome to GRUB!", eventually you can get to a grub> prompt. Attempting to access drives causes further freezes.

Symptom 2: If you set up a 14.2 system for EFI boot and configure elilo, the system hangs on reboot.

Trying the same thing on -current (using a DVD image generated using Alien Bob's mirror-slackware-current) works just fine.

Turns out the whole thing was self-inflicted. I had been switching the disk types away from the default of SCSI to SATA.

Reverting the drives back to SCSI makes the problem go away, but I've also seen this on some UEFI devices such as NUCs - has anyone found a solution to make 14.2 install cleanly on these with UEFI ?latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=QCTJycNQEOM:q2b1mA08lM4:F7zBnMy latest?i=QCTJycNQEOM:q2b1mA08lM4:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=QCTJycNQEOM:q2b1mA08lM4:gIN9vFwQCTJycNQEOM
