Report: Breeland facing suspension under substance abuse policy

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who was arrested and jailed Tuesday, already faced a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy in a separate incident, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Mike Garofolo.

Breeland is appealing the suspension, Pelissero adds.

The 28-year-old Breeland was charged with resisting arrest, transporting alcohol in a motor vehicle with a broken seal, having an open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle, possession of 28 grams or less of marijuana or 10 grams of hash, and driving without a license.

"None of the crimes charged allege that Mr. Breeland was consuming alcohol at the time of the arrest," Breeland's attorneys said Wednesday in a statement.

According to his representatives, law enforcement officers drew their weapons on Breeland after he made a "lawful purchase" at a gas station store and returned to his vehicle. "We look forward to investigating why this level of force was necessary," the statement said.

Breeland played a pivotal role in the Chiefs' Super Bowl run last season and re-signed on a one-year, $4.5-million deal this offseason.

The 2014 fourth-round pick out of Clemson played four seasons for the Washington Redskins and one for the Green Bay Packers prior to joining the Chiefs in 2019.

The new CBA approved by the NFL earlier in March includes several updates to the league's substance abuse policy. Among those changes, positive marijuana tests no longer result in suspensions.
