Thunderbird is unmarking read messages on its own

Having an issue with Thunderbird, and when I search for answers I get garbage.
Here's the issue: Thunderbird is UN-marking emails as read the next time I access it - in other words whenever I un-minimize it there will be boldface emails that were previously marked as read. Sometimes they will un-mark themselves as I watch.
If I close it down and re-open, there will be suddenly be read mail marked unread.
Have removed, purged, and re-installed Thunderbird, deleting and creating fresh profiles after re-installing, restored the OS from before this started, and have tried another Linux.
No success.
