Horizontally-challenged video display at install: Compaq F700, Mint Tricia

Linux newbie here. I'm trying to breathe life into some elderly laptops.

Successfully installed Linux Mint 19.3 (Tricia) on two Dell Latitude D430s, and one Compaq F700. Even got wireless to work.

When I install the same OS from the same USB stick on a second Compaq F700, as soon as the video mode shifts from VGA to higher-resolution, the display has multiple images of the text horizontally.
When it gets to the GUI, there are multiple recognizable icons displaced on the screen horizontally, and none of them are clickable.

I can get to the terminal window and execute (from keyboard shortcuts), but the display of that window is similarly horizontally challenged.

Same mobo (Quanta model 30EA v86.09) and bios (F.05) as my successful install.
Failing unit is Athlon TK-57 (1.9GHz).
Successful is Turion TL-58 (1.9GHz).

Report from inxi:
Graphics nVidia C67 (GeForce 7000M/nForce 610M) vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: nouveau v: kernel bus ID:00:12.0
Display: X11 server: X.Org 1.20.5 driver: nouveau
unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, vesa resolution: 1200x800-60hz, 720x576-50Hz
OpenGL: renderer: NV67 v: 2.1 Mesa 19.2.8 direct render: Yes

Now, this machine happily runs Windows 7 with the nVidia control panel with no display issues, so I am presuming that the hardware is okay.

So: is there a terminal command which will set the video display to a lower resolution mode?
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to troubleshoot which software setting is failing to correctly set the display parameters?

running from the install stick, and after installing fbset...
