Is it possible to sandbox or strongly isolate a nonfree driver?

For some reason wifi devices tend to require nonfree drivers but other hardware does not. Wondering why? What sort of intrusive or malicious operations are possible by such a driver and what can be done to sandbox or strongly isolate it?
