[SOLVED] Where in the boot process does Slackware set the font size with a graphics card

I hope the title says it all. I have a new (to me) 14" laptop which can do 2560x1440 pixels, but while in X I set it to 1920x1080 which is ok. My problem is that during boot, when slackware discovers the graphics card, it sets the font size to the max resolution - which is near enough unreadable for my old eyes.
In addition - I do a lot of work on the command line without having to bring up X.
Can anyone enlighten me as to exactly _where_ the font size is being set? My graphics card is an Intel HD graphics 520. The laptop - btw - is a Dell 4740?
