If you want an Android phone that delivers a high-quality experience without an outrageous price tag, OnePlus handsets are often some of the easiest to recommend. This has been the case ever since the original OnePlus One became a thing back in 2014, and it still holds true here in 2020.
In 2019, OnePlus's first release of the year was the OnePlus 7 Pro. It was a successor to 2018's OnePlus 6 and 6T, and it marked a noticeable shift for the company towards a more premium user experience and an even higher price tag.

The latest OnePlus flagship
While the OnePlus 7 Pro holds up quite nicely here in 2020, it's no longer the best OnePlus has to offer. Instead, that title belongs to the 8 Pro. There's a lot going on with the phone, from its 120Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 865 processor, 30W wireless charging, and much, much more.
What's the story of the OnePlus 7 Pro?
The OnePlus 7 Pro was announced on May 14, 2019, with sales opening up a couple of days later on May 17. It was quite a big shift from the OnePlus 6T that was released a few months before it, offering a much sleeker design, a display with virtually no bezels, three rear cameras, and upgraded specs across the board.
That said, all of those improvements came at a cost. Pricing for the OnePlus 7 Pro started at $669, which was quite a jump from the OnePlus 6T's $549 starting price. It marked one of the biggest year-over-year price increases we've ever seen from OnePlus, but as it would turn out, the extra cash was well worth it.
You could buy the OnePlus 7 Pro unlocked in the U.S. like all past OnePlus devices, and it was also the second phone from the company to be sold on T-Mobile in the country.
A few months later in September 2019, the 7 Pro was followed-up with the OnePlus 7T. The 7T was better than the 7 Pro in certain areas and worse in others, with its ultimate goal being to offer a similar user experience at a lower price.
The OnePlus 7 Pro then got a proper successor in April 2020 with the OnePlus 8 Pro, which quickly proved itself to be the most technically impressive device we've ever seen from the brand.
Did the OnePlus 7 Pro get good reviews?As noted above, the 7 Pro was something of a shifting point for OnePlus. The company upped its hardware game in a big way, with the phone even outshining the newer 8 Pro in some ways.
One of the biggest talking points of the OnePlus 7 Pro was its display. It offered a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with a snappy 90Hz refresh rate, but the real highlight was the fact that there weren't any bezels, notches, or hole-punch cutouts of any kind. OnePlus achieved this by hiding the selfie camera in a pop-up mechanism in the top frame of the phone, resulting in a glorious screen that was allowed to shine without any interruptions.
OnePlus's glass design was also exquisite, coming in gorgeous Nebula Blue, Mirror Gray, and Almond colorways. The size and weight of the 7 Pro took some getting used to, but there's no denying that this hardware still holds up incredibly well over a year later.
When you paired that together with top-of-the-line specs, good cameras, a fast in-screen fingerprint sensor, and excellent haptics, it's easy to see why the OnePlus 7 Pro was so easy to recommend.

Is the OnePlus 7 Pro running Android 10?
The OnePlus 7 Pro shipped with Android 9 Pie at launch, but it has since been updated to Android 10. This means it has dark mode, gesture navigation, upgraded permission controls, and everything else Android 10 brought to the table.
While OnePlus hasn't talked much about its Android 11 update plans quite yet, we fully expect the OnePlus 7 Pro to be updated to the new software once it becomes available.
OnePlus tends to be pretty good when it comes to updates, especially in regards to keeping its older hardware on new software builds. In fact, you can get Android 10 on the OnePlus 5 and 5T - two phones that were released back in 2017 with Android 7.1 Nougat.
