JohnTheRipper: how to specify a pattern

Hello,
in my ultimate stubbornness, I refuse to reset root's password of my machine. Thus i have been trying to crack it.

I came across the "John the Ripper" tool.
Question:

how do i specify mode/rule(?) to attempt to crack the password based on a pattern?

I remember part of the password:
<special sym> or not|WORLD|<special symbol>|<maybe another character>|<a few digits>

for example:
~WORLD?20 or WORLD?12 or !WORLD1

in other words, "world" is there, but the rest of the characters are gone from my fingers' memory :(latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=GH12lL31e7A:aIMCfpWT8-o:F7zBnMy latest?i=GH12lL31e7A:aIMCfpWT8-o:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=GH12lL31e7A:aIMCfpWT8-o:gIN9vFwGH12lL31e7A
