Hamilton police say a stabbing in an east end parking lot last month is now considered an attempted murder.

Police upgraded aggravated assault charges against a 26-year-old man after new information led police to transfer the case to the major crime unit, which investigates homicides and attempted murders in Hamilton.

On May 30, just before 9 p.m., police say there was an altercation" between two men in the Bottoms Up Bar & Grill parking lot on Barton Street East, a few streets east of Sherman Avenue.

At the time, the 32-year-old victim was taken to hospital in serious condition with knife wounds to his neck and face, police said.

The suspect fled the scene on foot but patrol officers quickly arrested the 26-year-old several blocks away. He was charged with aggravated assault, weapons offences and breach of probation.

On June 8, police received unspecified further evidence" that led to the case being transferred to major crime detectives.

On June 10 and 11, City of Hamilton public works staff helped police recover a knife in a sewer near the crime scene.

Jesse Patey, 26, of no fixed address, is charged with attempt murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of fail to comply with probation, assault with a weapon and utter threat to cause death or bodily harm.

He appeared briefly in Hamilton court by video June 9, where the attempted murder charge was added to his other charges. He remains in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Christian Mukendi of the criminal investigation branch at 905-546-2967.
