Message notification problem - using Android 8

I had too many notifications on my main screen, so I went in and turned as many of them off as possible, excluding the message notifications.
Now, when I receive a text message, it only very briefly notifies me on the main screen. It doesn't stay there any longer. I have to "messages" app and then touch "start chat," then touch "New Conversation" to get to the screen where I can see if I have any new messages (marked as bold type).
How can I solve this problem? I want the most recent notifications to show up on my home screen, like when I first turn on my phone.
