how to make the move from unity to gnome?

Ubuntu changed the desktop environment from unity to gnome. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 and finally want gnome to give a try.

However, out of the box gnome is not fully functional. The biggest problem I am facing is the missing global menu. For example, bookmarks in Firefox are no longer directly accessible. Instead of digging myself through the hamburger menu I am now preferring Ctrl+b.

The desktop has now an additional bar on the top which isn't used very efficiently. I even have some applications which have no menu at all in gnome. The only way to access the menu is by using some key bindings I'd have to google for as I don't remember :(

Another change I don't like is that windows controls for close, min- and mazimize are on the right side. It has always been on the left - why did they change it?

I've heard gnome has plug-ins but I didn't got those to work at the time.

1. would you recommend gnome over unity for ubuntu?
2. which customization do you recommend someone new to gnome?latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=DvpJuf_ldj8:j0hgLJ4Vy-Y:F7zBnMy latest?i=DvpJuf_ldj8:j0hgLJ4Vy-Y:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=DvpJuf_ldj8:j0hgLJ4Vy-Y:gIN9vFwDvpJuf_ldj8
