A 19-year-old Hamilton man has been criminally charged in a crash that killed a 20-year-old woman earlier this month.

The 19-year-old was arrested on the morning of June 19, said Det. Sgt. Matthew Whiteley, of the Niagara Regional Police Service collision reconstruction unit.

Bulend Typhoon" Dikici is charged with criminal negligence causing death and three counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Police allege he was behind the wheel of a 2016 Civic in which the 20-year-old victim was a passenger.

A Hamilton police press release about the case Friday did not include the man's name or details of charges, citing a publication ban. However, after The Spectator sought clarity with Niagara police, the name was released Monday.

Niagara police led the investigation and a Niagara crown will prosecute the case in Hamilton court because the woman killed was the daughter of a Hamilton officer. It's typical for outside police services and prosecutors to be called in cases where there could be any perception of bias.

The crash happened around 9:54 p.m. June 3 in the intersection of Airport and Nebo roads.

The 2016 Honda Civic was westbound on Airport when it struck the passenger side of a Ford Escape that was on Nebo, police said.

The 20-year-old woman was killed. The driver and two other passengers in that car were seriously hurt.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a 41-year-old Hamilton man, was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
