nobody will solve my printing issue

Symptoms:
-cups is setup, print test page works fine, printer is usb
-no application recognizes the printer, the drop down menu either lists only PDF printing or PDF printing and a 'generic printer'. the ' generic printer' does nothing.
-when I press ctrl+P it takes 5 minutes for the printing dialog to appear and the program locks up
-this error is in /var/log/cups/error_log:
Code:CreateDevice failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited:Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1It worked last time I tried to print, and I changed nothing.
