Kali Linux Sound issues -

I know its a basic issue hence. I am new to Linux but I did work with Solaris 2.6 &10 for many years. I am dumb but not hopeless. I have an ASUS ROG laptop that I installed Kali Linux. I did all the checked and made sure that pulseaudio is running. I can see that the audio device is recognized...just no sound. Itried installing alsa and gnome after uninstalling and reinstalling PulseAudio. I assume this is a driver issue. Solaris does nothing with sound so I do not have anything to compare this with. I can see the device and raise and lower the sound but nothing... any ideas?
