.tgz vs txz

Hi! I'm using Slack for many times so I've two questions in order to has clear mind. Which difference between .tgz and .txz files, and so which is a good method: direct download .tgz/txz files or compile each files
(SlackBuild or classic mode - ./configure && make && make install)?
